How to deal with hair dye allergy

Some are able use hair dye without any issues, but some suffer from an allergic reaction upon exposure. This reaction to hair dye is called contact dermatitis which is caused by various chemicals found in hair dyes. It usually affects the face, areas that surround the eyes, neck and ears.

Symptoms of hair dye allergy

  • Itchiness and flaking of th scalp

  • Burning and stinging sensation
  • Development of red rashes around the face and ears
  • Swelling of the face, eyes and lips

Causes

  • Hair dye allergy can be caused by the chemical found in the dye called PPD or para-phenylenediamine which is responsible for allowing the dye to remain in the hair for a long time. It penetrates deeply into the hair shaft and hair follicles.
  • Cobalt found in brown-colored hair dyes.
  • Other chemicals present in hair dye that are capable of triggering hair dye allergy symptoms include ammonia and glyceryl thioglycolate.
  • Other chemicals found in hair dye such as peroxide, fragrances and pigments can cause inflammation and itchiness of the scalp

Treatment

  • Wash the hair using mild shampoo to eliminate any residues of the hair dye on the scalp.
  • Take over-the-counter antihistamine medications to lessen the itchiness of the scalp.
  • Lemon juice has an antiseptic property that lessens scalp irritation caused by hair dye allergy. Mix a few drops of water with lemon juice and apply it over the scalp. Another alternative is mixing lemon juice with yogurt that is applied on the scalp.
  • Mix a few drops of water on baking soda. Mix to create a paste and apply on the affected scalp for at least 10-15 minutes and rinse properly with water.
  • Coconut oil is also good in moisturizing the skin. It also prevents dryness and itchiness due to hair dye allergy. Apply coconut oil on the scalp and leave it in place for at least 15 minutes and wash it off using a shampoo.
  • Apple cider vinegar has anti-inflammatory properties that relieves dryness and itchiness of the scalp.
  • Apply aloe vera gel on the scalp and spread it evenly and allow to stay in place for at least 10-15 minutes and wash it off using a mild shampoo. Aloe vera gel lessens the itching and inflammation as well as preventing dryness of the scalp.
