Students receive high quality basic first aid training in Nanaimo First Aid.
First aid certification programs are 14–16 hours long. Basic first aid topics such as wound care, CPR and AED (cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillation), and medication administration are included in the lessons. AEDs are machines that are attached to the chest with pads and give needed shocks to the heart.
Stand-alone classes for CPR are also included. CPR training has three levels, lasting four, five, and six hours respectively. There are three levels students can choose from: A, C, and HCP. Level HCP is for health care professionals, focusing on basic life support in the hospital setting with an AED machine and bag valve masks.
St. Mark James certificates are awarded after the completion of a program.
To pass a class, the student must have complete attendance, 75 percent on the written exam, and a good return demonstration of first aid skills. Certificate cards are given to all students, while wall-mount certificates are optional.
These certificates are valid for three years and can be renewed through recertification classes. Recertification classes for first aid are available twice weekly, lasting 8 hours, and include CPR level C recertification.
