Causes of keratosis pilaris

Keratosis pilaris is the result of build-up of keratin which is a hard protein that functions in protecting the skin from harmful substances and infections. It forms scaly lumps that cause blockage of the hair follicles. They usually form many lumps and causes patches of rough and bumpy skin. Keratosis pilaris can also be caused by some skin conditions like atopic dermatitis.

Treatment and home remedies

  • Wash the affected areas using mild soap or cleanser
  • Do not scrub or remove the lumps since it can cause irritation of the skin and worsen the condition.
  • After bathing or washing, gently dry the skin with a towel so that some moisture remains in the skin. Apply a moisturizer with lanolin, petroleum jelly or glycerin to help soothe the skin and help trap moisture.
  • Apply over-the-counter medications that have urea such as Nutraplus or lactic acid twice daily since it helps in the removal of some extra keratin found on the surface of the skin.
  • Install a portable home humidifier to add moisture to the air inside the home.
  • Seek medical help if the symptoms become worse.
  • Eat a balanced diet especially fruits, vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids help in the improvement of the texture of the skin like salmon, flax seeds and walnuts.
  • Avoid allergens like smoke, perfumes, laundry detergents that are scented, dust mites and mold.

Prevention of keratosis pilaris

  • Moisturize the skin in order to provide a seal over the skin and keep water from escaping and thicker moisturizer are the best such as Euricin and Cetaphil.

  • Use mild soaps that have added ingredients like oils and fats like Neutrogena, Basis or Dove.
  • After taking a bath or shower, moisturize the skin with oil or cream.
  • Install a portable home humidifier to add moisture inside the home and make sure the humidifier is clean, free from bacteria and fungi.
