Remedies for pinkeye

Fact Checked

Pinkeye or conjunctivitis is characterized by redness and swelling of the conjunctiva. It is the mucous membrane that lines the eyelid and surface of the eye. The lining is usually clear but it becomes red and swollen when irritated and infected. Pinkeye is caused by a virus or bacteria but it can also be due to chemical substances, allergies and underlying diseases.

Viral and bacterial pinkeye is contagious. It can be easily spread through poor hygiene such as poor hand washing and sharing objects such as towel with a person who has pinkeye. It can also be spread by sneezing and coughing. Children with pinkeye should stay away from school or day care.

Pinkeye due to allergies to pollen, animal dander, perfumes, cosmetics and chemicals or liquids that includes bleach and furniture polish are not contagious.

Symptoms of pinkeye

  • Swollen eyelids
  • Redness of the white part of the eye
  • Itching or burning sensation of the eyelids
  • Swelling and tenderness on the front area of the ears
  • Clear or slightly thick whitish drainage that can be gray or yellow and cause the eyelashes to stick together.
  • Mild pain
  • Swelling of the upper eyelid which makes the lid droop.

Treatment

  • Remove contact lenses and wear glasses until symptoms totally disappear. Clean thoroughly the contact lenses and storage case to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Apply a cool compress on both eye. Apply the compress against the eyes for at least 5 minutes. Use a different compress on each eye to prevent the spread of infection. Use a new compress each time when applying.
  • Clean the eye by wiping from the inside or next to the nose toward the outside. Use a clean surface every each wipe so the drainage that is being cleaned is not rubbed across the eye. Used tissues or wipes should be discarded immediately to prevent the spread of infection.
  • After cleaning the eye, wash hands thoroughly.
  • Apply the prescribed over-the-counter artificial eye drops to lessen the gritty sensation in the eyes. Another alternative is using artificial tears to soothe the eyes.

Tips

  • A bacterial infection is very contagious. It is vital to wash hands often while still infected especially before and touching the eyes. If possible, avoid touching the eyes as much as possible.
  • Use a clean towel every time when cleaning the eyes to prevent the infection from recurring.
