How to treat a wolf spider bite

The wolf spider is one of the dangerous species of spider. It is usually mistaken for a tarantula. They are also called “hunting spider” and “ground spider.” They are active hunters and do not spin webs on their prey. Generally, the spider stalk their prey and pounce on them. They bite if they are threatened and startled.

Symptoms of a wolf spider bite

Treatment

Soak a clean towel in cold water and apply directly to the affected area to lessen the swelling the pain and stop the spread of venom to other areas.
  • Before touching the bitten area, wash hands properly using anti-bacterial soap. Wash and clean properly the affected area using mild anti-bacterial soap and warm water to prevent development of infections.

Another alternative is using a cold pack wrapped in a towel and placed in the area for at least 15-20 minutes several times every day within 24 hours.

  • Avoid scratching the area to prevent making the condition from becoming itchier and a high risk of becoming infected by bacteria.
  • Elevate the affected area to lessen the swelling and the pain. If bite happen on the leg or arm, elevate them above the level of the heart. Raise the area in a couple of pillows to keep it elevated.
  • Salt is rich in antiseptic properties. Clean the bitten area using clean water. Spread some table salt on the area and then cover it by wrapping a piece of cloth over the area and secure it with a medical tape. Salt will absorb all the venom in the area and prevent development of infections.

Tips

  • Clear vegetation around or near the house. Remove debris from the surroundings such as rock, wood and piles of lumber.
  • Seal all cracks and holes near the foundation of the house and around doors and windows.
  • Use plastic sealed storage containers to protect belongings from spiders.
  • Vacuum the house at least once every week and clean scraps of foods that attract insect and wolf spiders.
