Treatment
- Stop the bleeding. Using a clean cloth or gauze to apply firm pressure on the area until bleeding stops.
- If a bone is protruding through the skin, avoid touching it or try to put it back in place to prevent further damage and worsen the condition.
- Remove any jewelry on the hand to prevent difficulty in removing them when the area swells.
- Apply an ice pack on the affected area to lessen the swelling and the pain. Wrap the ice pack in a towel before placing to the area.
- If the hand becomes numb or cold or the skin under the fingernails becomes blue, avoid moving the area.
- Splint the lower arm using fabric or elastic bandages. Rolled paper, cardboard or other stiff materials can be used as a splint. Make a sling and place the arm of the affected person in it and tie it around his/her neck to prevent unnecessary movement.
- Take the prescribed antibiotics to prevent the wound from becoming infected.
- Take the prescribed pain medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to lessen the swelling and the pain.
