How to treat a broken hand

A broken hand is an injury involving a break in one or several of the bones on the hand. This injury typically occurs during a fall and landing on an extended hand. Generally, the hand is a complex part of the human anatomy.

Causes of a broken hand

Symptoms

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • A history of injury
  • Weakness
  • Misalignment of the fingers
  • Inability to grasp
  • Reduced range of motion of the fingers

Treatment

  • Stop the bleeding. Using a clean cloth or gauze to apply firm pressure on the area until bleeding stops.
  • If a bone is protruding through the skin, avoid touching it or try to put it back in place to prevent further damage and worsen the condition.
  • Remove any jewelry on the hand to prevent difficulty in removing them when the area swells.
  • Apply an ice pack on the affected area to lessen the swelling and the pain. Wrap the ice pack in a towel before placing to the area.
  • If the hand becomes numb or cold or the skin under the fingernails becomes blue, avoid moving the area.
  • Splint the lower arm using fabric or elastic bandages. Rolled paper, cardboard or other stiff materials can be used as a splint. Make a sling and place the arm of the affected person in it and tie it around his/her neck to prevent unnecessary movement.
  • Take the prescribed antibiotics to prevent the wound from becoming infected.
  • Take the prescribed pain medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to lessen the swelling and the pain.
