A concussion is a type of head injury that occurs when an impact strikes the head. Generally, concussions may lead to altered mental states including the loss of consciousness. This head injury is common from accidents such as falls, car accidents, bike accidents but can also be acquired from those who play sports that involve contact such as football. Most of the time, concussions are not life-threatening but can lead to a person requiring medical attention.

Signs and symptoms of a concussion
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Problems balancing
- Dizziness
- Vision problems such as double vision or blurred vision
- Drowsiness
- Confusion
- Memory problems such as memory loss or impaired memory
- Increased sensitivity to sound or light
- Having trouble concentrating
Some of these symptoms may not appear immediately after the concussion occurs and may take several hours or even months to appear.
If you have any of these symptoms or you suspect that you are suffering from a concussion, get medical attention as soon as possible and schedule an appointment with your doctor to get the appropriate treatment.
Severe injury
If you suspect that someone has suffered a concussion, you can identify one of the following symptoms:
- Irritability
- Difficulty balancing or walking
- They experience seizures
- They are having trouble in talking
- There is a presence of bloody discharge from the ears or nose
- Lastly, confusion after a long period of time
If you notice any or more of these symptoms on a person, immediately call 911 and get the person medical attention as soon as possible to reduce any more injury.
When your doctor diagnoses your concussion, he will ask what kind of accident caused the concussion and the symptoms that you’ve noticed after the accident to determine the severity of the concussion. The doctor also performs physical exams to determine the severity. For more serious symptoms, an MRI scan or CT scan of your brain are necessary to check if you have any serious injuries.
A special eye test may also be performed on you to determine if you are suffering from a concussion. Visual changes, the behavior of eye movements, and how sensitive you are to light can be used to determine if you have a concussion.
