Here is a short lesson that will introduce you to the numerous topics covered in Kelowna First Aid’s basic first aid class.

Did You Know – The Benefits of Pursed Lip Breathing

One of the major topics covered in St Mark James training programs is respiratory emergencies. These include asthma attacks, hyperventilation, drowning, choking and anaphylaxis. These situations have their own signs and symptoms and methods of rescue management. A popular method for aiding asthmatics and hyperventilating individuals is pursed-lip breathing. This type of breathing is useful in improving the flow of air in out of the lungs by prolonging the expiratory phase of breathing. By exhaling through pursed lips, more oxygen is retained and more carbon dioxide is blown out. Pursed-lip breathing is done with the lips in a “pucker” position and allowing the victim to blow air out slowly in a slow, steady rate. To help the victim, the rescuer should do it with the victim as you inhale through the nose and exhale through pursed lips.

Pursed lip breathing is only one of the many components that rescuers will learn when enrolled in St Mark James basic first aid and CPR programs in Kelowna First aid.

The video below will demonstrate how pursed-lip breathing is done in emergency situations.
