Wounds

Wounds may be intentional (surgical) or unintentional (accidents), open or closed, or acute and chronic. Other classifications are by depth, likelihood, or degree of wound contamination. Wounds that are classified by depth may be partial- or full thickness wounds. Partial thickness wounds involve only the upper layers of the dermis while full thickness wounds involve the entire dermis and often underlying subcutaneous fat and muscle. Dressing any kind of wound is important to prevent microbial contamination that can lead to infection.
