Shock
One of the most commonly treated emergencies is shock. Shock is the reduction of blood flow to vital organs which essentially reduces oxygen delivery to cells and tissue and causes them to die. Emergency treatment for shock is remarkably easy and a popular acronym that can help you remember what to do is “WARTS” (Warmth, Airway, Rest and Reassurance, Treatment and Semi-Prone / Sitting).
- Warmth – Keep the victim’s temperature stable and as close to normal as possible. If the victim is in a hot environment provide shade or remove them from the heat. If he or she is cold, cover the victim with a blanket.
- Airway – Loosen tight clothing and keep an open airway. Monitor all vital signs, especially blood pressure, temperature, and heart rate.
- Rest and Reassurance – Provide reassurance for the victim and keep calm.
- Treatment – Usually done at the hospital with fluid resuscitation (blood transfusions, etc.)
- Semi-Prone / Sitting – Only move the victim if you don’t suspect a head or spinal injury. Semi-prone or sitting position allows better blood flow to and from the heart and allows for adequate ventilation of air to the lungs. Contact EMS if you haven’t done so already.
