Insect bites in toddlers can cause a mild or severe reaction that happens within the area where the toddler of the bite or sting. Itchiness is the common reaction of insect bites because the body tries to fight the poison or saliva of the insect. Insects that can bite include mosquitoes, fleas, bees, wasps, hornets and deer flies.

  • Apply an over-the-counter lotion to lessen the pain, itching and irritation due to insect bites at least 3 times every day.
  • Apply an ice pack on the bite site for at least 15-20 minutes to relieve the itchiness.
  • Take over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen to lessen the pain and inflammation.
  • Elevate the affected area to lessen the swelling.

Tips

  • Apply an insect repellent before going out into the woods.
  • Avoid applying the repellant on the hands of the child since they usually place their hands in their mouths.
  • After returning indoors, wash the insect repellant off the body using soap and water.
  • Avoid wearing lotion with perfumes, aftershave or scented hair products during warm months.
  • Wear light-colored clothes that cover the body such as long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Long pants should be tucked inside boots. Avoid wearing loose clothes that can entangle a stinging insect.
  • Avoid wearing sandals or barefoot outdoors.
