Treating a bruised buttock

Bruised buttock causes bleeding in the muscles due to direct impact on the area by a blunt object such as a hard ball and from a fall. It will cause breaking of tiny vessels of blood found in the substance of the buttock and result to bleeding under the skin of the buttock area.

People playing sports such as ice skating, baseball, high jumping, football pole vaulting, gymnastics and hockey are prone to bruising their buttocks.

Causes of buttock contusion

  • Spinal fracture
  • Slipping on ice
  • Injury on the buttock

    Tenderness of the area when sitting down or when touched.
  • Coagulopathy
  • Poor nutrition
  • Child abuse
  • Anticoagulant medications
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Blunt trauma
  • Mongolian spot

Symptoms

  • Tenderness of the area when sitting down or when touched
  • Buttock pain
  • A hard lump under the skin and discoloration of the skin from red to blue and black to green and yellow which is a sign of hematoma.
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness when moving the thigh in forward direction caused by stretching of the gluteus muscles.
  • Pain when moving the thigh against resistance.

Treatment

  • Take plenty of rest especially the affected area. Avoid performing activities that further irritates the area and worsen the condition.
  • Wear the prescribed firm fitting pants such as spandex to support the affected area and lessen the pain.
  • Apply an ice pack on the affected area for at least 10-15 minutes to lessen the swelling, the pain and the bleeding. Wrap ice pack or frozen gel in a towel before placing to the area to prevent further irritation and worsen the condition.
  • After 48 hours, apply heat on the affected area using hot soaks, heat lamps, heating pads or heat liniments or ointments. Place hot water into the hot pack. Move the hot packs gently over the area and apply some pressure to increase flow of blood in the area and for fast healing.
  • Fill a mug with hot water; mix it with 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt. Mix well until salt is dissolved. Soak a cotton ball in the solution, wring excess water and place the cotton ball on the inflamed skin to lessen the swelling and relax the muscles. It also relieves soreness of the area. Repeat this process every hour.
  • Wrap the area using elasticized bandage wrap between treatments to prevent further irritation on the affected area.
  • Gently massage the area to lessen the swelling and the pain.
  • Take prescribed medications to lessen the inflammation and the pain.

Tips

  • Wear protective equipment such as hip pads when performing any activities.
  • Proper conditioning of the muscles and good coordination before performing exercises or athletic competition.
