Remedies for a ligament tear in the wrist joint

Fact Checked

A ligament tear in the wrist joint is caused by falling on the hand which puts the wrist in an uncomfortable position. The wrist is the most complex joint in the body.

Wrist injuries can result to several problems such as torn ligament, wrist sprain or even fracture of wrist bones. Ligaments are strong bands of tissues that keeps bones attached to one another.

Pain and swelling of the affected area is one of the indications.
  • Acute trauma or repetitive use of the affected area.
  • Falling on an outstretched arm with the palm side down or excessive torque at the wrist or twisting movement.
  • The ulnar side of the wrist is hyper-extended
  • Lifting heavy weights
  • Applying excess pressure on something more than the capacity of the body
  • Excessively playing sports

Symptoms

  • Pain and swelling of the affected area
  • Skin discoloration and bruising
  • Difficulty moving the wrist
  • Clicking sound can be heard when moving the wrist
  • Difficulty grasping or holding objects
  • Discomfort when using the wrist joint
  • A feeling that the wrist bone is not moving properly and not aligned is a sign of injury or a torn ligament.

Treatment

  • Rest the affected area for at least 48 hours.
  • Apply an ice pack on the affected wrist for at least 10-20 minutes every 3-4 hours for 2-3 days to lessen the swelling and pain.
  • Wrap the wrist using an Elasto-crepe bandage to give support to the wrist joint and compression to lessen the swelling and inflammation. Avoid wrapping it too tight to prevent problems with circulation.
  • Apply a cast or a wrist splint on the affected area for support, prevent unnecessary movement and for fast healing of the injury. Wear the wrist splint with a sling for at least 4-6 weeks. Avoid prolonged use of the splint to prevent stiffness and weakness of the muscles.
  • Elevate the affected wrist above the level of the heart to lessen swelling.
  • Take the prescribed anti-inflammatory pain medications to lessen the swelling and pain.
  • Once the pain and inflammation has reduced, gradually start performing stretching and strengthening exercises with the help of a physical therapist to restore full function of the affected wrist.

Tips

  • Perform exercises safely to avoid falls.
  • Use wrist guards or tape to prevent bending of the wrist backward during a fall.
  • When performing daily activities, use the prescribed wrist brace for stability of the wrist and lessen the ligament pain.
