A bone bruise causes pain and makes regular activities difficult. Bleeding inside a bone can damage the bone marrow or the inner layer of a bone. The injury usually takes several weeks or even months to be totally healed, depending on the area that is affected.
Symptoms of a bone bruise
- Swelling of the joint
- Stiffness
- Tenderness and pain that last longer than a normal bruise
- Difficulty using the affected joint
- A bruise that happen in the knee can result to accumulation of fluid in the knee which can be painful.
Treatment
- Take plenty of rest to allow the body to create tissues of bone without stressing the damaged area.
- Use crutches to lessen the amount of weight on the damaged bone.
- Wear a brace, cast or sling to give support and allow the bruise to rest.
- Apply a cold compress immediately after the injury to lessen the pain and swelling for at least 10-15 minutes every 3-4 hours for 2-3 days until the swelling is reduced. Avoid applying directly on the skin to prevent further damage to the area.
- Heat can be applied on the affected area to lessen the pain and for fast healing of the condition. Heat can be in the form of heat packs, hot water bottles, microwavable pads or a hot shower. Apply heat on the area for at least 15-20 minutes at a time for 3-4 days.
- Take the prescribed over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen to lessen the inflammation, swelling and pain and for fast healing of the bone bruise.
- Elevate the affected area above the level of the heart throughout the day to lessen the swelling. When lying down, elevate the area using a couple of pillows.
- Seek the help of a physical therapist for some rehabilitation exercises for the injured joint to prevent further damage. Perform appropriate exercises in each stage of healing to prevent stiffness and improve mobility.
Tips
- Eat a well-balanced diet
- Perform exercises regularly particularly weight-bearing exercises.
- Wear protective equipment when playing sports.
- Quit smoking to prevent weakening of the bones
- Limit alcohol to only 2 drinks per day. Drinking more than this amount can result to weakening of the bones.
- Take the prescribed calcium supplements
