Training Courses Offered
All training course levels are inclusive of basic first aid, CPR, and AED training. With the latest Basic Life Support (BLS) guidelines, CPR and AED go hand-in-hand in the BLS pathway, which is activated during an emergency response to cardiac arrest. Courses that include CPR and AED focus on the updated changes in technique and general guidelines when performing a rescue. AEDs are machines able to detect heart rhythms and apply needed shock to restart the heart. Recent studies have shown that correct CPR and AED within 3-5 minutes of collapse increase the survival rates of victims.
However, stand-alone classes are available to trainees who do not wish to undergo a complete training course. Stand-alone classes include CPR and AED or first aid only training. Other stand-alone classes cover food safety and even first aid for beloved pets. Ottawa First Aid makes sure that its trainees have a wide selection of classes to choose from.

What is Fainting?
Trainees signed up for basic first aid training will learn to manage patients who have fainted. Fainting is defined as loss of consciousness stemming from a sudden but temporary reduction in blood flow to the brain, often due to stress or injury. A person may faint for various reasons, the most common of which are:
- A stuffy room
- Standing for an extended period of time
- Overly active
- Standing up too quickly (person may experience orthostatic hypotension, which causes a sudden drop in blood pressure)
- Medical disorders
- Stress
- Emotional shock
If someone has fainted, contact EMS and try to identify the cause for fainting and adequately manage the situation.Stay with the patient, reassure him or her to prevent additional stress, and recommend the patient to seek medical attention.
The material posted here on fainting is for learning purposes only. To learn to recognize and manage these emergencies, enroll in basic first aid and CPR training offered at Ottawa First Aid.
