Neck sprain

Neck sprain

Fact Checked

The neck is most susceptible to sprains because it is the less protected area of the spinal column with the most demand on a daily basis. If there is damage to the muscle, tendon or ligament found in the neck area, it can cause a minor neck sprain or a severe condition of the vertebrae or nerves. In most cases, a neck sprain can be treated effectively and can heal in a few days.

Neck sprain is a common traumatic injury while engaging in exercises such as weight lifting. This can cause excessive stretching of the neck muscles or cause an injury to the vertebrae of the neck. An incorrect posture while sleeping at night can also cause a neck sprain.

Causes

  • The neck can be strained by keeping the head in an awkward position such as pushed forward with the ears in front of the shoulders for long periods of time when using a computer.
  • Some people who are at a high risk for neck sprain include beauticians. The stiffness of the neck can be caused by a sprain in the levator scapula muscles which is located at the back of the neck. It is responsible for connecting the cervical vertebra with the shoulder.

A neck sprain is not a serious condition and the symptoms usually diminish in a few days or in weeks. During the initial phases, the individual is not capable of moving the neck forward, backwards or sideways. There is also difficulty in doing daily activities and sometimes there is swelling of the neck muscles during the severe stage.

Neck sprain
Apply an ice pack over the painful and inflamed part of the neck at least three times every day.

Treatment and home remedies for a neck sprain

  • Apply an ice pack over the painful and inflamed part of the neck at least three times every day. Ice works by minimizing the swelling and stiffness which is just starting to develop.
  • Once the inflammation lessens, apply a warm compress over the area of the neck at least for 10-15 minutes at 3 times every day. Remember that heat helps promote the proper circulation of blood in the neck muscles and helps in relaxing spasms of the muscles of the neck.
  • Massage gently the neck using comfrey oil. Avoid doing it vigorously since it can worsen the condition. Massage improves blood circulation in the area of the neck and relaxes the strained muscles. You can use mustard oil instead of comfrey oil.
  • Ginger possesses anti-inflammatory properties. The oleoresins that are found in ginger helps in reducing the inflammation and spasms of the sprained muscles of the neck. A paste made out of ginger powder can also be applied to the affected area alternately with fresh ginger juice.
  • In case the symptoms are severe, encourage the individual to rest for a few days. When sitting, roll a towel up and place it on the back since it helps maintain proper alignment to the spine and for support to the neck.
  • Apply an ointment that contains capsaicin over the affected area.
