Causes of shoulder bursitis
Shoulder bursitis happens after an injury on the rotator cuff which involves the muscles and tendons that function in connecting the shoulder blade and the upper arm bone. Some causes of a rotator cuff injury include lifting very heavy objects or repetitive movements of the arm and falling on the arm or shoulder.
Symptoms of shoulder bursitis
Symptoms of shoulder bursitis includes swelling and stiffness in and around the affected area, pain that increases when there is pressure or movement and the area may feel tender and warm. Sometimes, the affected area becomes red. There is difficulty in moving the shoulder joints like raising the arm over the head can be very painful. There is difficulty in falling asleep because of the dull aching pain. Additionally, there is also pain when lifting objects and weakness of the shoulder and arms.
Treatment of shoulder bursitis
- The first stage of the treatment involves resting the affected area and the application of an ice or cold compress on the area. Do not forget to elevate the shoulder.
- The individual should take time away from activities that caused the pain since it will help in minimizing the inflammation.
- Use braces or wrap to help protect the shoulder while healing.
- Take anti-inflammatory pain medications, muscle relaxants and cortisone injections. These can help in the healing of shoulder bursitis
- If swelling is causing the build-up of fluid in the shoulder, a needle is inserted into the shoulder by the doctor and draws the fluid out. The fluid will be analyzed.
- Perform some exercises like strengthening and stretching programs with the guidance of a physical therapist.
Prevention of shoulder bursitis
For stability of the shoulder joints and range of motion, the person has to maintain the strength of the muscles and tendons. If the individual is suffering from shoulder pain, an exercise program on strengthening and stretching as well as endurance exercises for the shoulder muscles helps keep the rotator cuff strong.
Perform warm up and cool down on the muscles before and after participating in any activity and exercise. The person should use the proper techniques in lifting weights, swinging a racquet, swimming and throwing a ball.
The person should maintain good posture by standing tall. Do not slouch since it causes strain on the shoulder joint, upper back muscles and the neck and avoid lifting heavy objects.
The person who is suffering from shoulder bursitis should avoid repetitive motions that will cause irritation like reaching actions.
