Chills is experienced when the body is exposed to extreme cold or accompanied with fever. Some people have chills all the time without having fever or exposed to cold, and these people complain of them from the time they get up until they go to bed at night without an obvious cause. Sometimes, they are so severe that there is chattering of teeth or the body shivers while the face is pale.

There are reasons for chills without fever in which some are caused by medical conditions or related to the normal physiological process.

Causes of chills without fever

Chills happen when the body tries to raise its core temperature with rapid contraction and relaxation of the muscles. The person experiences goosebumps with raised hair and face that is pale when it is cold caused by stress of the body. It is considered an early symptom of fever and an infection, but there are several causes of chills without fever which includes the following:

  • It occurs due to the low hemoglobin level in the blood or anemia. The affected person has a pale face and experiences fatigue, dizziness and breathlessness.
  • An infection of the urinary bladder which usually occurs among women.
  • Side effects of certain medications
  • Poor nutrition and gastrointestinal problems related to absorption can cause malnourishment.
  • When the level of glucose in the blood is very low, it will result to a condition called hypoglycemia. It can go with other symptoms of hypoglycemia such as disorientation, anxiety, sweating and palpitations.
  • A condition called hypothyroidism sometimes causes chills and shivers in the body.

Treatment and home remedies

  • The person should have at least 8 hours of sleep every day and it should be undisturbed sleep. A good sleeping habit helps in rejuvenating the system of the body and provides a fresh feeling upon waking up in the morning.
  • Drink herbal tea that is mixed with honey can help in reducing chills and shivers.
  • Eat a healthy diet that contains vegetables and cereals since this can help in minimizing the chills. Eating warm foods can also help increase the internal heat.
  • The individual should perform simple walking for 30 minutes or play outdoor games. These can help in minimizing chills because after engaging in activity, the internal heat in the body increases.
  • Drink warm water, warm chicken soup and warm tea since these can effectively help in minimizing the condition while at the same time keeps the body well hydrated
  • If the individual suffers from continuous chills throughout the day, he/she should take a warm shower once or twice in a day.
  • Wear warm clothing in cold climate can help in preventing and treating chills and rigors. If caused by an underlying condition, it is best to seek medical care immediately.
  • Take a Vitamin B supplement since this can help in minimizing chills and increase the overall energy of the body.
