A finger dislocation occurs when 2 bones of the finger that forms the joint become displaced causing injury on the ligaments and other soft tissues. Generally, it can occur in any of the finger joints and usually common in the middle knuckle of the ring, middle or the index finger.
Causes of finger dislocation
- Finger dislocation can be caused by overextension
- A strong force placed on the end of the finger
- Playing basketball or baseball can strike the tip of outstretched finger
- The finger becomes trapped in equipment such as game jersey or pads
- Falling into an outstretched hand
Symptoms
- At first, the finger looks twisted, swollen and painful
- It can be bent upwards or at any angle
- The finger cannot be bent or straightened
- Numbness or tingling sensation
- Lastly, the area becomes pale
If dislocation causes a break in the skin or there is a break in the bone, seek medical help immediately
Treatment
- With finger dislocation, the finger can become swollen. Remove immediately any jewelry such as rings on the finger to prevent making the condition worse.
- Apply an ice pack on the affected finger at least for 20 minutes every 3-4 hours at a time until the pain disappears. If an ice pack is not available, use a bag of frozen vegetables such as peas.
- Elevate the area above the level of the heart. When sitting or lying down, place the affected area in a couple of pillows.
- Place the affected finger in a protective splint for a couple of weeks to prevent unnecessary movement or tape the affected finger next to the other finger.
- Take the prescribed anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen to lessen the pain and inflammation.
- Start performing simple exercises to strengthen the fingers and improve range of motion. Gently bend the affected finger using the other hand. Try to straighten it with the help from the other hand. Remain in that position for at least 5 seconds and repeat the process 10 times.
