There are different types of headaches and there are many factors that causes them. A headache above the left eye can be caused by problems with the nerves or blood vessels found in the area or a symptom of an infection.
Causes of a headache above the left eye
- Headache above left eye can be caused by cluster headaches which are common in men ages between 20-30 years old.
- Sinus infection
- Glaucoma
- An infection or tumor in the left eye or brain
- Abnormal vessels of blood in the brain that can leak or burst will result to bleeding or stroke.
- Trauma to the head or near the left eye
- Migraine headaches with nausea, vomiting and dizziness
If the individual experiences symptoms such as pain in the head that becomes severe with coughing or sneezing, early morning headaches, vomiting, weakness of the arms and legs, changes in vision and seizures, it is vital to seek medical help immediately.
Treatment
- Lie down and relax at least for 30 minutes, keep the room quiet and make the light dim and focus on the breathing to relax the mind and promote fast healing of the condition.
- Apply a cold compress using an ice pack on the affected area.
- Take a warm bath or shower
- Massage the neck to lessen the pain and use the thumb of the index finger to apply pressure on the affected area.
- Take a prescribed over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen, naproxen, acetaminophen and aspirin to lessen the pain and swelling.
- Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration which can result to a headache especially when vomiting or having a hangover. For men, drink at least 13 cups or 3 liters of water every day. Women should drink at least 9 cups or 2.2 liters of water every day. Drink more water if frequently exercising or living in hot or humid areas. Avoid drinking cold water when there is a headache to prevent migraines
- Perform muscle relaxation techniques to lessen the pain such as yoga or meditation.
- Avoid exposure to loud noises, bright lights and strong odors such as smoke from cigarettes to prevent headaches.
- Limit alcohol, caffeine, sweets and processed foods
- Avoid changes in sleeping schedules and skipping meals
- Perform exercises regularly to promote better body functioning. If possible, perform exercises outdoors since the fresh air and change in scenery are beneficial.
- Perform warm up and cooling down properly. Performing strenuous activities and then suddenly stopping can result to headaches.
- Maintain a good posture and avoid slouching or bending the body forward so that the back becomes rounded.
