Fibrositis is an inflammation of the tough, muscular nodules found between the shoulder blades. When this area becomes tensed and stressed, tiny buds of tissue will protrude on weak areas in the muscles, membranous capsule becomes pinched and low supply of blood. The nodules cause pain and press on the nerves and cause severe pain down the arm.

Women ages 30 and 60 years old are more susceptible to this condition more than men.

Symptoms of fibrositis

Causes

  • Having a family history of the condition which result to inflammation of the joint such as polyarthritis

Treatment

  • Rest the affected area regularly to lessen the pain.
  • Apply heat on the area using a heat pack for at least 10-15 minutes. Place a wet damp cloth between the skin and heat to prevent burn and worsen the condition. Another alternative is taking a bath under hot showers and focus the hot water on the painful area. Heat lamps, whirlpool and electric heating pads can be used and also good for the condition.
  • Take the prescribed over-the-counter medications to lessen the pain and the inflammation.
  • Perform some relaxation techniques and meditate to relax and lessen the spasms of the muscles.
  • Injection of prescribed cortisone to lessen the pain and the inflammation.
  • Biofeedback to relax contracted muscles. Biofeedback is a technique used to control the functions of the body such as the heart rate. It also focuses on making changes in the body such as relaxing the muscles of the body to lessen the pain.
  • Prescribed antidepressants to lessen the symptoms.
  • Stay active as much as possible even with presence of pain to prevent stiffness of the affected area.
  • Seek the help of the physical therapist for some conditioning and stretching exercises to lessen the pain and restore normal movement of the affected area.
  • Stop drinking alcohol and caffeine to prevent difficulties with sleeping.

Tips

  • Avoid lifting heavy objects to prevent straining the muscles of the shoulders.
  • Perform regularly gentle exercises for the upper torso to maintain good health of the shoulder muscle.
  • Avoid being stressed to prevent cramps and spasms of the muscles of the shoulders.
  • After performing exercises cover the body and avoid cooling off of perspiration with uncovered upper back.
  • Consume a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Low fat diet, low protein or meat diet. Add nuts and seeds to the meal because they are low in calories and rich in fat contents.
