Eyelid cyst

Eyelid cyst

Fact Checked

Eyelid cyst or chalazion is a small lump that develops under the skin of the eyelid due to the blockage of an oil gland. It usually happens on the higher or lower eyelid. This condition is not contagious and adults are more susceptible to the condition than children.

An eyelid cyst is similar to a sty, but it is larger and causes less pain. It is a hard lump and swelling that spreads to the area around the eye and sometimes causes irritation and pain. If infection develops, it becomes red, swollen and painful. Eyelid cysts are due to blockage and inflammation of the meibomian glands found in the eyelids. Some people have thick Meibomian gland secretions which make them more susceptible to blocked oil glands that result to cysts.

An eyelid cyst is not a dangerous condition and sometimes obstructs vision and cause problems in the eye. Eyelid cysts usually heal on their own within 2-8 weeks.

Causes

Eyelid cyst
Eyelid cysts are due to blockage and inflammation of the meibomian glands found in the eyelids.

The Meibomian glands are sebaceous oil glands in the eyelids near the lashes and produce a lubricant that helps prevent the evaporation of tears in the eyes. If the lubricant is not capable of flowing out of the gland, it will accumulate and form a bump in the eyelid and spread to the surrounding tissue and result to inflammation of the eyelid.

They are sometimes complications due to blepharitis which is chronic inflammation of the eyelids. Chalazia can also be caused by conditions such as Meibomian gland dysfunction as well as acne rosacea. Individuals with conditions such as tuberculosis, seborrhea which is an inflammatory skin problem that causes red rashes and white scales and viral infections are susceptible to develop eyelid cysts.

Symptoms

  • A painless lump can be seen in the upper eyelid
  • Sometimes, chalazia can develop inside the lower eyelid and with increased tearing.
  • Swelling, red and severe pain.
  • When pressure is placed on the cornea, a large chalazion in the middle of the eyelid can cause temporary astigmatism that result to a blurred vision.

Treatment of an eyelid cyst

  • Apply a warm compress on the affected eyelids to promote proper circulation of blood in the area and promotes drainage of the gland. It also helps lessen the pain and swelling. Soak a piece of cloth in hot water that is clean and sterilized, wring out the excess and apply on the eyelid for at least 5-10 minutes at 3-4 times every day for 2 weeks.
  • Massage gently the affected eyelid can help promote fast drainage and healing. Wash hands with soap and water and then apply a warm compress on the closed eyelid for at least 5 minutes. Using the fingers, massage the affected area in an upward direction at least 2-3 minutes several times every day.
  • Maintain regular hygiene by washing the eyelids regularly using a few drops of baby shampoo and mixed with warm water.
