A diaper rash or nappy rash develop when the highly sensitive skin of the baby is under exposure to moisture, chemicals and rubbing. Diaper rash is a common skin condition that causes skin inflammation that strikingly resembles a collage of bright reddened skin on the bottom of the baby. It can be due to dampness or not changing the diaper regularly, sensitivity of the skin and chafing. Anyone wearing diaper can develop this condition.
Symptoms of diaper rash
- A red mark and tender looking skin can be seen in the buttocks, thighs and genital area of the baby.
- Sensitivity of the area when washed or touched
Generally, if there are severe symptoms such as bleeding, itching, oozing, burning sensation or pain when urinating or bowel movement as well as fever, medical care is required.
Causes
- Allowing a wet or dirty diaper to stay for a long period in the bottom of the baby without changing
- Rubbing action against the diaper
- Bacterial and yeast infection
- Rashes that form on the scalp or cradle cap can also show up in the bottom of the baby.
- Irritation from stool and urine
- Allergic reaction to diaper
- Reaction from a new product such as baby wipes, diaper and detergent.
- Reactions to substances found in lotion, powder and oils.
- Introduction of new foods
- Use of antibiotics
Treatment
- At first, wash off the bottom of the baby using warm water. Avoid wiping the affected area. Use a bulb syringe in spraying water to the sensitive area. Remove any remaining dirt by dabbing with a baby wipe or a wet cloth. In addition, avoid using baby wipes with fragrance or alcohol to prevent further damage that can worsen the condition.
- Let the baby air dry after washing the bottom. If using a towel, dab the area gently. Avoid rubbing to prevent irritation.
- Place a new diaper on the baby. Make sure that is loosely fitted or use a diaper that is one size bigger for the baby.
- Let the baby sleep without a diaper. Place a protective sheet on the crib to prevent further irritation from urine. Allow the rash to dry for fast healing of the condition.
- Apply diaper cream on the affected area to prevent skin irritation against stool and urine. Another alternative is applying petroleum jelly on the diaper rash regularly when changing diapers to prevent irritation of the area.
- Baking soda possessing healing properties that is beneficial for the rash. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 4 cups of water until totally dissolved. Before changing the diaper of the baby, use the mixture in washing the bottom of the baby for fast healing of the condition. Another alternative is soaking the baby in warm bath mixed with baking soda for at least 10 minutes at 3 times every day. Make sure that the baby is totally dry after the bath.
