A black eye is an injury that involves bleeding under the skin around the eye. It can cause serious injuries such as internal damage to the eye or a fracture of the thin bones situated around the eye. In case there is a serious injury or retinal damage, use home remedies to minimize the blood and promote fast healing of the area.

Treatment and home remedies of black eye

  • The first thing to do is apply a cold compress or ice pack over the affected area immediately after the injury. Ice helps minimize the swelling and tightens the blood vessel. This helps minimize internal bleeding and for fast healing of the injury. Wrap a few ice cubes in a clean cloth or towel and place it over the affected area for at least 10 minutes. This must be done several times every day for the first 48 hours.

  • Eat foods that are rich in vitamin C such as guavas, peppers, lemon, limes, broccoli, and oranges. Take note that vitamin C helps in strengthening the walls of the blood vessels and helps in the healing process.
  • Place a handful of calendula flowers in a cup of hot water and allow precipitating for 10 to 15 minutes and then refrigerate for 30 minutes. Immerse a cloth in this cool solution and place it over the affected eye area for 5 minutes. You can repeat this procedure several times in a day.

Additional measures

  • Use arnica which is an herb that reduces the swelling that occurs with a black eye. It also helps promote the healing of the muscles of the eye and other tissues that sustain damage. Arnica is available in the various forms such as ointments, topical creams and oil. You can apply them over the area at least 2-3 times every day.
  • Apply the pulp of pineapple and papaya topically around the affected area of the eye or drink the fruit juices. Additionally, the individual can eat pineapples and papayas.
  • Create a solution by mixing chamomile essential oil, water and witch hazel. Immerse a cloth or towel in the solution and apply over the eyelid and surrounding region. Perform this process at least 2-3 times every day.
  • Avoid swimming until the eye fully heals.
