Sweating is the natural way of the body to cool itself and it is healthy and natural to sweat. This will eliminate excess sodium content in the body. On the other hand, excessive sweating or constant perspiration is hyperhidrosis.
Hyperhidrosis is an abnormal condition of the body where there is increasing production of perspiration than is normally necessary to regulate the temperature of the body. It causes embarrassment and anxiety if perspiration can be seen in the palm of the hands, groin area, on the underarms and soles of the feet, but can also affect other parts of the body. Hyperhidrosis happens more in hands, feet, groin areas and the armpit. Take note that this condition can develop because the concentration of sweat glands in the body is very high.
Causes of excessive sweating
- Episodes of profuse sweating can be congenital. Hyperhidrosis usually starts during the early adolescence period and can be caused by some inherited dominant genetic traits.
- Hyperhidrosis can be caused by disorders in the pituitary and thyroid gland, menopause, tumors, gout, mercury poisoning and diabetes mellitus.
- Over activity of the sweat glands.
- Anxiety and nervousness can make the condition worse.
- Certain foods and drinks, nicotine, caffeine and all their smell could cause hyperhidrosis.
Treatment and home remedies
- Take a bath regularly in order to minimize the amount of bacteria on the skin.
- Eat varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and dairy products since these can help cool down the body. If possible, the individual should avoid spicy foods.
- Drink plenty of water at least 8 glasses of water every day.
- Avoid drinking ice cold beverages since these will only increase the internal temperature of the body. Drinking cold water or drinks will cause the body to heat up in order to restore the normal temperature of the body. Drink water in room temperature or just slightly cool.
- Drink hot green tea since this helps in eliminating toxins that causes the body to sweat.
- Avoid drinking alcohol since it increases the flow of blood into the heart and will cause an increase in the temperature of the bod since it also dilates the vessels found in the skin, thus resulting to sweating episodes.
- Quit smoking and minimize consumption of caffeine. An increase in adrenaline will cause a fast heart rate and make the person sweat.
- Wear light, breathable and comfortable clothes and stick with loose-fitting and natural fabrics such as cotton for added comfort to the individual. Avoid wearing nylon and polyester since these materials will only increase and trap sweat which causes sweating and body odor.
- Try a prescribed antiperspirant which contains aluminum chloride. It helps block the sweat glands. Apply the perspirant at night and wash it off in the morning. Aluminum chloride can burn the armpits if not properly used but will stop the sweating.
