Eczema: causes

The medical term for eczema is atopic dermatitis. Eczema is a chronic inflammation of the skin that causes redness and itching. This condition usually appears on the backs of the knees or the inside of the elbow. In children – especially infants (infatile dermatitis) – the rash usually appears on the scalp and face. The cause of eczema is still unknown, but it has been theorized that it can be a combination of dry, sensitive skin and an immune system disorder. Stress, food, and certain allergens can aggravate eczema symptoms.
