South Edmonton Training Centre

First Aid Courses
Three major first aid, CPR and AED courses are available at this training provider. These comprehensive courses come standard with CPR and AED training. They are as follows:
- Standard first aid – This course is the most popular OH&S approved course. It requires participants to attend a minimum of two days to successfully complete the program.
- Emergency first aid – This course is the most basic of the three courses and requires participants to only attend one day.
- Childcare first aid – This course is very similar to the standard program and also requires two days to complete. Participants will receive CPR level “B” training and learn about additional topics referring to childcare.

Stand-Alone CPR and AED Classes
Participants that are required or want to have only CPR and AED training may enrol in stand-alone courses. Varying level’s of training are available including:
- CPR level “A” and AED – This is the most basic level that requires 4 hours and teaches participants adult CPR rescue techniques.
- CPR level “C” and AED – This is a comprehensive level that requires 5 hours to complete and teaches participants rescue techniques for victims of all ages.
- CPR level “HCP” and AED – This level is similar to CPR level “C” but adds additional components for individuals that work in, or want to work in, the health care environment.
- Basic Life Support – This is a 4 hour course that is similar to CPR level “A” and AED.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – Two day intensive CPR and AED course.
- Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – Two day intensive CPR and AED course focusing on paediatric rescues.

Basic first aid covers a lot of emergency scenarios, one of which is seizures. A short, introductory lesson on seizures is given below to convince you to enroll in Edmonton First Aid today.
Seizures
Seizures can be one of the most frightening things for people to see. However, people that have received effective training should be aware of what it is and what they can do to help. A tonic-clonic seizure is a convulsion or series of convulsions that happen when there is a large discharge of electrical impulses occurring in the brain. Tonic-clonic seizures are only one kind of seizures. Other seizures may not have obvious signs and symptoms, only repetitive tics such as lip-smacking or repetitive hand movement. All seizures require emergency medical attention.
The following is a quick list on what to do when you suspect a person is having a seizure:
- Contact EMS (911)
- Remove any objects surrounding the victim that may cause injury. Provide room for the victim so that he or she can have the seizure without injuring themselves.
- Turn the seizing victim to his or her side to prevent aspiration (entry of saliva, vomit, or foreign objects into the airway).
- Do not restrict the victim’s limbs or body from having the seizure.
- Do not place anything into the victims airway or mouth.
- Try to record the length of the seizure and frequency of convulsions.
- Place a towel, pillow or something soft underneath the victims head to prevent the skull from impacting the hard ground. Do not restrict the convulsions of the head.
